                                                                         WEEK ONE
DAY ONE
FRACTION
A fraction is a part of a whole  or a part of a set. E g,  1/2, 3/4,  5/9  e. t. c
Example:
Addition of fraction
Simplify [a]3/7 + 2/7 [b]3/5 + 3/10 + 2/15
                Solution
[a ]3/7 + 2/7
                =the  LCM =7
                =3+2/7
                =5/7

[b]  3/5 + 3/10 + 2/15
= the LCM = 30
=18 +9 + 4
        30
=31/30
=1    1
        30
                ASSIGNMENT
Simplify the following
[a]11/18  + 2/9  [b] 2   2  + 5  3   + 3   9    [c] 5/12 + 1/4  + 3/10
                                           7         8               14

DAY TWO
SUBTRACTION OF FRACTION
It is easy to subtract one fraction from the other most especially when the fraction
 have a common denominator.
Example
Simplify the following pairs of fraction
a.       22/5  - 13/7  -25/14
b.      5  1  _   2  2
    5             3
Solution
[a ] 22/5  - 13/7  -25/14
 The LCM OF 5, 7 and 14 = 70
=   [14x 22] - [10x13] – [5x27]
                        70
=   308 – 130 – 135
        70
=  308-265
          70
=    43
      70

[b] 5  1  _   2  2
          5              3
Solution
Take each of the fraction to improper fraction form
= 26/5  - 8/3  the LCM of 5 and 3 =15
= 78-40
      15
=38/15
=2     8
        15
ASSIGNMENT
Simplify the following
[a]3 7 – 1 3  - 1  13  [b] 6  5 – 1  5  - 1  13     [c] 4   1     -   25
        8         10        24             12      22      3      11                42       21

DAY THREE
FRACTION INVOLVING ADDITION AND SUBTRACTION
Example
Simplify the following
[1] 2  5 + 3  3  -  1  2   [2] 7  1 + 2  7  - 1  3
          17      17      17             2        10      5
Solution
2  5 + 3  3  -  1  2
   17      17      17
=express each fraction as improper fraction
39/17 + 51/17 -19/17
=[39/17 +51/17]  -  19/17
=39 +51   - 19
      17         17
=90/17 -19/17
=90-19
      17
=71/17  =                   4   3
                                        17

[2] 7   1 + 2  7  - 1  3
                                 2        10      5
Solution
=15/2  +27/10 -  8/5
=70  +  27  -  16
        10
=97  -  16
       10            =  81/10      =8   1
                                                    10

 ASSIGNMENT
Simplify the following
[a]  2/9  + 1/36  - 3/10   [b]   3   7  +  1   3  - 1  13  [c]  4  2  +  2  1  -  7
                                                       8            10               24            6           5      10
DAY FOUR
EQUAVALENT FRACTION
The fractions 1/2, 2/4, 4/8, 8/16…..are equivalent fractions because the value of the fraction are not changed if the numerator and denominator are multiplied or divided by the same number
Example
Complete the following by finding the missing numbers
1: 3/5 = /30
2: 1/2 =--- /6 = ---/10= 7/---

                                                                                     Solution
1.       3/5 = --/30 let the missing number be x
        3/5=x/30
        5x=90
        Divide both sides by 5
        5x/5=90/5
        X=18.

2.        ½ = /6= /10= 7/
        ½ = a/6 = b/10 = 7/c.
        ½ =a/6,cross multiply,
       2a = 6,divide both sides by 2
                             a =3.
       ½ = b/10,cross multiply
       2b = 10,divide both sides by 2
        b = 5.
       ½ = 7/c,cross multiply,
       C = 14.
The complete fractions are: ½ = 3/6 = 5/10 = 7/14.
ASSIGNMENT.
Complete the fractions below by finding the missing values.
(a)    4/5 = 8/ = 16/ = /50 = 48/ . (b) ¾ = /20 = /30 =21/ .
                                                                 DAY FIVE.
STILL ON EQUIVALENT FRACTIONS.
Simplify by finding the missing numbers.
(a)    1/5 = /25 = 24/ = /20 . (b) ¾ = /8 =9/ = /20.
SOLUTION.
(a)    1/5 = /25 = 24/ = /20
1/5 = p/25 = 24/x = y/20.
1/5 = p/25,cross multiply
5p = 25,divide both sides by 5
P = 5
(b)   ¾ = /8 =9/  = /20
¾ = x/8 = 9/y =t /20
¾ =x/8,cross multiply
4x =24,divide both sides by 4
   x = 6

¾ = 9/y,cross multiply
3y = 36,
divide both sides by 3
  y = 12.

¾ = t/20,cross multiply
4t = 60 divide both sides by 4
t = 15.
ASSIGNMENT.
(a)    2/3 = /6 =10/ = /12. (b) 7/8 =/16 =21/. (c) 4/5 = 16/ = /50.
